Keynote Session: Tough Times Don't Last; Tough NPs Do! Speaker: The Honorable Gale Adcock, MSN, RN, FNP-C, FAANP, FAAN

In November 2014, Rep. Gale Adcock won election to the NC House of Representatives, the first APRN elected to that state's legislature, winning one of the most competitive races in the state. Now in her second term, she has sponsored bills to protect the hospital workers from assault; raise safety standards in operating rooms; add life-saving screening tests for NC newborns; allow police officers to be given their retiring K-9 partners; require Medicaid reform models to include NPs in ACOs; authorize NP, PAs and CNMs to sign handicap driver placards; add money for teen tobacco prevention to the state budget; and remove physician supervision from NP and CNM practice--to name just a few. Many of her bills are now state law.

Before being elected to the NC House, Rep. Adcock served 7 years in local government, including 3 years as Mayor Pro-Tem of the 7th largest municipality in North Carolina.

Rep. Adcock has worked to modernize state NP practice in multiple roles spanning 30 years: past president of the NC Nurses Association, past chair of the NCNA legislative committee, past chair of the Council of Nurse Practitioners, past member of the NC Board of Nursing, past chair of the NCBON/NCMB Joint Subcommittee, and as inaugural chair/treasurer of North Carolina's Nurse Practitioner Political Action Committee.

Rep. Adcock has a BSN from East Carolina University, an MSN from UNC-Chapel Hill, and has been an FNP for 30 years. She is the Chief Health Officer for SAS Institute, a global leader in business analytics. As the company CHO she leads a staff of 58 that provides free onsite primary care to SAS employees and families, newborns to elders.

Rep. Adcock is a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.

In her keynote, Rep. Adcock will share the why, what and how of nurse practitioners' successful advocacy journey.
