NP Week 2024: We've come a long way baby!
By: Terri Schmitt PhD, APRN, FNP-BC, FAANP
Executive Director, NPACE
Upon becoming a nurse practitioner 23 years ago, I practiced in one of the most restrictive states in the U.S. in one of only two nurse practitioner-owned clinics in the entire state. We were rural. We were predominantly serving a population that was largely uninsured or with only Medicaid coverage. I vividly recall strategies we employed to navigate the complexities of obtaining DME; we would meticulously draft paperwork to present to our collaborative practice physician on his once weekly visits. He was compensated hourly for reviewing and signing charts, assisting with orders that could only be authorized by a doctor, and providing consultations as necessary. During that time, reimbursement rates from Medicaid and insurance were suboptimal for NPs, we were prohibited from prescribing controlled substances, and our collaborative practice physician was required to reside within a specific radius of the clinic.
Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice
Lisa Mathis MSN, FNP-BC, ANCC Program Director NPACE
Fall is in the air! The temperature has changed from warm and muggy to cool and crisp. The fall breezes blow the orange and yellow leaves around like colorful tornados that adorns lawns and streets. In the stores, before the ghosts and spider décor is off the shelves, the pumpkin and fall decorations are strategically placed to catch the consumer’s eye. Coffee shops entice us with Pumpkin Lattes, Pumpkin spice teas and various fall sundries. The smell of apple spice and cinnamon infiltrate the nostrils in such a pleasant way. But pumpkins are much more than a fall treat, or a symbol of when to pull out our flannel shirts and sweaters.
